I’ve been invited to the zoo since going vegan. I appreciate the sentiment because they think “she loves animals, so she’ll love the zoo!” The reality is that I hate the zoo because I love animals. I will not support their captivity and being profited off of.
The last time I went to the zoo was in 2012 on a school trip. Honestly, I’m not sure what grade ten class goes to the zoo, and I can’t remember how it related to our curriculum, but I was there. I was excited to see the animals, but was blind to the idea of these animals being unhappy in their confined environments. Many people say that zoos do so much for animals - they rehabilitate, care for and love them. These things may happen, but that doesn’t mean that there still are negative aspects of the practice.
I speak all about my thoughts on this topic as well as what I’ve got upcoming in the animal rights scene on The Vegan Ambition podcast. The Vegan Ambition is a podcast series, hosted by Daniel Ruginets, helping people go vegan. Rugi interviews people of all diets and all walks of life! I’d appreciate it if you checked out the episode I was featured on. Let us know what you think in the comments - What do you think about going to the zoo?
